Neighbourhood effects in education

Abstract
The phenomenon of neighbourhood effects is a wide ranged researched issue internationally in the focus of education. The concept examined in this perspective suggests that the living environment and its aspects have significant impact in one’s academic achievements. In a domestic point of view there is little information available in the topic, thus the purpose of the review is to provide knowledge about the appearance of the phenomenon and its impact of students’ learning outcomes. During literature analysis American and European aspects and their differences were processed. Cardinal question during examining neighbourhood effects is their correct identification as well as the interpretation of the relationship between social inequalities and neighbourhood effects. Based on literature the relationship between the individual leaning outcomes and the living environment depends on the poverty of the area, the educational atmosphere and social disorganization. Taking neighbourhood effects into account can be part of the measures aimed at improving the status of educational inequality.
