Absztrakt

The Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture was the most important industrial unit in Pécs. The working class was the most determinative social group in the free royal city. The most factories were founded in the middle of the 19th century. Thanks to the industry became Pécs the economical centre of the South Transdanubian Region. The Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in the 1860s. Vilmos Zsolnay was a very talented merchant, who bought his brother’s small manufactory, which became a word famous porcelain manufacture. Vilmos Zsolnay experimented a lot of new technologies, and made new types of ceramics like porcelain-fayance and eosin. Until his death he got more than twenty international prize. After the Word War II the socialist state conficted the manufacture, which was the end of the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufacture’s vicissitude. In the 1990s the state tried to sell the manufacture, but thanks to the state’s bad economical position it failed. In 2006 Pécs won the title of European Capital of Culture in 2010, and the city built the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter.
